On Saturday 24 September, visitors to the Swan Centre were given the opportunity to help reduce their carbon footprint.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Eastleigh joined shoppers and helped launch a new Bra Recycling Initiative in the Centre as women’s fashion shop, Bonmarche teamed up with the charity ‘Against Breast Cancer’ to encourage women to give their support to their new Bra Recycling Campaign.
Other activities and exhibits at the event included a treasure trail around the shops to see just how much can be recycled when shopping, with everyone taking part receiving a set of twig pencil crayons.
There was a Tin Can Alley, with shoppers invited to knock over cans featuring pictures of energy using items. Every hour, the shopper identifying the items with highest energy usage and environmental impact won a prize from the Eastleigh Transition Network.
Tesco put on a delicious display of local produce, to offer members of the public a taste of just how good it is to buy local and the smoothie bike was a real hit with visitors receiving a healthy fresh fruit as they discovered how much energy it takes to power a blender.
On a practical front, visitors were able to learn how to reduce their wastage and save money with water saving gadgets and information on the metering program from Southern Water; find out about the EBC’s grant supported programme - Insulate Hampshire and gained information on how to become part of a growing community with the Eastleigh Transition Network.
There was advice from The Environment Centre; the New Forest Nappy Network who explained why it is better to use nappies made of natural products rather than disposable and Healthy Planet Books for Free revisited the Centre.
In addition to launching the Bra Recycling Initiative, The Mayor and Mayoress were also invited to judge an Eco Art competition.
During September the children of Eastleigh painted flowers, windmills and vases, made from plastic bottles collected in the Swan Centre’s new bin system, with the inspired works of art displayed in a special eco gallery.
The winners have now been chosen and will be anounced on Monday 3 October 2011.
